What to Expect at Your First Session

First of all, it takes a lot of courage to recognize that you need help with life's challenges; just walking into a therapists office a a big step. That first session, can seem pretty overwhelming. It is normal for you to feel nervous about meeting your counselor/therapist for the first time.

During the first session, your counselor will likely ask you a few questions; this time is about getting to know you, and what you want to get out of therapy. Your counselor will ask about your background, and inquire about your current situation, and any past issues you may have had.

First Session Goals

Your therapist will attempt to set a goal for your time together, and focus on what you want to achieve in therapy.

Your therapist will also go over first session paperwork, and explain the limits to confidentiality.

Your Role at the First Session

It is important that you ask questions so that you feel comfortable with your therapist.
Also, you may want to explain how you are feeling in that first session.
It is important that you are as open and honest as you can be with your therapist, so they can best support you.

Ask Questions

It is okay for you to ask questions to your counselor. You may want to ask:
  • What does it mean to be in therapy?
  • What does the therapist do?
  • What happens if I don't get along with my therapist?
  • What if I start to feel worse?
